What it is

The dark area surrounding the nipples are called areolae. Their size and shape contribute to the overall appearance of the breasts. Whether caused by aging, breastfeeding, genetics or trauma, the areolae can either be too large, disproportionate to the breast size or asymmetric. Areolar reduction is a simple surgery that can correct the overall aesthetics of the breast by improving the shape, size and symmetry of the areolae.

Areolar Reduction is great for:

  • Reducing the size of the areolae

  • Correcting or restoring symmetry of the areolae

  • Correcting irregularities of the areolae

Options

Areolar Reduction is very commonly performed in combination with other surgeries such as Mastopexy and Bilateral Breast Augmentation.

Approximate duration of surgery:

1-2 hours

Anesthesia

Areolar Reduction can either be performed under local anesthesia, local anesthesia with sedation or under general anesthesia. It is best to consult with Dr Rizis in order to establish the best technique for your surgery.

Post-Op Care

Areolar Reduction is a day surgery. You can therefore return home the night of your surgery and for the remainder of your recovery. Dr Rizis will see you within the first 5 to 7 days to assess your skin and scar as well as remove sutures. Recovery continues for a few weeks until the swelling has significantly subsided. Most patients resume normal activities such as work, driving, showering and exercise within the first 3 to 5 days.

Potential Risks & Complications

Although unlikely, all surgical procedures pose potential health risks. During the pre-operative consultation, Dr Rizis will go over all possible risks and complications as well as pertinent procedure information.
